MEXICO

Mexico is the fifth largest country in the Americas by total area, also the most populous Spanish-speaking state in the world. From economic point of view, Mexico has the 15th largest nominal GDP.

All the special qualities of Mexico, and being neighboring country to USA, have made it a world-class tourist destination. In 2017, it was the sixth most-visited country in the world with 39.3 million of international tourists.

Country proud of its history, it was home to many advanced Mesoamerican civilizations such as the Olmec, Toltec, Teotihuacan, Zapotec, Maya, and Aztec before first contact with Europeans.

The Yucatán Peninsula comprises the center of the Mayan civilization, which range from south Mexico into Honduras. There are many Maya archaeological sites throughout the peninsula; some of the better-known are Chichen Itza, Tulum and Uxmal. Since the 1970s, the Yucatán Peninsula has reoriented its economy towards tourism, especially in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. The Riviera Maya, which stretches along the east coast of the peninsula between Cancún and Tulum, houses over 50,000 beds.

TULUM

Tulum is the site of a pre-Columbian Mayan walled city which served as a major port for Coba, in south of the Mayas Riviera. It was one of the last cities built and inhabited by the Mayans. They chose this location because, being inside the Hurricane ring of the Caribbean, traditionally never has a direct hit from this catastrophic weather phenomenon.

Tulum attractions can be divided into four main areas: the archaeological site, the pueblo (or town), the Zona Hotelera(or hotels zone, beach front) and the biosphere reserve of Sian Ka’an.

The Tulum ruins are the third most-visited archaeological site in Mexico, after Teotihuacan and Chichen Itza, receiving over 2.2 million visitors in 2017. The site is relatively compact compared with many other Maya sites in the vicinity, and is one of the best-preserved coastal Maya sites.

Tulum Pueblo is a quiet village 2 km (1.3 mi) from the archaeological site, with a population of 18000 inhabitants. Due the tourism development of the last few years, now there are plenty of vacation rentals, small hotels and hostels, as well as restaurants, bars, fashion boutiques, arts and handicraft shops.

The Zona Hotelera is the water front of Tulum with a paradisal white sand beach, turquoise waters, surrounded by the jungle, palm trees, boutique hotels and some beach clubs.

Tulum has a tropical savanna climate, luckily with a pronounced dry season. Its geology is composed of soluble rocks, being mostly limestone. Due to this extreme karst nature you can enjoy the amazing cenotes, small lakes and underground rivers typical of the Mayan Riviera.
